I have been square dancing for as long as I can remember. It was part of family gatherings, weddings, and community celebrations. Long before I understood its history, I understood the joy it brought.
Square dancing has English, French, and Scottish-Irish roots. Traditionally, four couples form a square, each couple facing the center. A caller guides everyone through a sequence of movements. Today this style is often called Modern Western Square Dance, but many people also know it as barn dancing or folk dancing.
My Introduction to Modern Square Dance

As a child, I knew it simply as “barn dance.” Four couples would form a square, and one couple at a time would move according to the caller’s instructions. It was simple, social, and welcoming. Anyone could join.
In 1996, I saw a local newspaper notice about square dancing classes at a nearby school. That is when I was introduced to Modern Western Square Dance as it is practiced today. Instead of one couple moving at a time, all four couples perform the calls together.
At first, my husband was unsure. But we decided to try it — and we were hooked. We made lifelong friends, expanded our social circle, and discovered a wonderful community. This was a community that was friendly, worked together, and was always ready to help with the calls. At the end of the classes we graduated and were very proud of our accomplishment. When you returned the next year, you were classified as an “angel,” which meant you helped new beginners learn the calls.
The welcoming spirit of square dancing is one of the things I have always appreciated most about it. This community, like square dancing, will help you learn, progress, and become part of a well-oiled community.
The Start of Being Ageless
Square dancing is one of the ways I stay active and feel ageless. There are more than 100 calls to learn, each with its own direction and pattern. Some are added over time, others retired, but all require focus and memory.
Because of this, the activity stimulates the brain while gently exercising the body. You must listen carefully to the caller. If you lose concentration, the square can break down and everyone has to reset. That mental focus keeps your mind sharp.
There Are Many Levels
Dancers begin with Mainstream, where basic calls are learned and combined. Over time, new variations build on those basics — much like building a house step by step.
After Mainstream comes Plus, where additional calls expand your skills. Some dancers continue to Advanced levels, which move faster and require even greater precision and teamwork.
No matter the level, square dance keeps both body and brain engaged.
How Square Dance Supports an Ageless Lifestyle
There are many ways dance supports long-term wellness:
- Movement & Steps – A typical evening can reach 9,000–10,000 steps.
- Heart Health – Regular dance may help support cardiovascular health.
- Calorie Burn – Dance can burn 200–400 calories in 30 minutes.
- Bone Strength – Side-to-side movement strengthens weight-bearing bones.
- Mental Sharpness – Memorizing and responding to calls keeps the brain active.
- Balance & Stability – Coordinated movement helps maintain balance as we age.
- Stress Relief – Concentration on the calls leaves little room for daily worries.
- Social Connection – A welcoming, smoke-free, alcohol-free environment where friendships grow.
Studies have shown that activities combining mental and physical movement may help support long-term cognitive health. Square dancing naturally blends both. Dance is one of the most enjoyable forms of active movement for maintaining an ageless lifestyle through dancing.
Apparel Then and Now

When we first began, women wore frilly skirts with petticoats, and men wore western shirts and ties. Over time, dress codes relaxed. Today, many groups welcome comfortable everyday clothing, making it easier and more affordable for newcomers to join.
Dancing Around the World
Square dancing is enjoyed worldwide. Interestingly, regardless of the country, calls are traditionally given in English. This makes it easy to visit other regions and immediately join a square.
Square dancing has helped me manage stress, stay socially connected, and maintain an active, engaged lifestyle. It is one of the reasons I feel committed to living fully and staying ageless. If you are interested in exploring additional wellness and lifestyle topics, you can learn more here.
